Through a space between the trees, Daisy could see the animal’s big black paws swiping and swatting at their tents and the camper and the picnic table.








It was a bear! And he did not sound happy.

Luke stopped in his tracks. Austin stopped behind him. They held their arms out to keep Daisy behind them. “Shhh,” Luke whispered. “Back up quietly. Don’t let him see us. Or hear us.”

The kids started moving backward very, very quietly. And they were getting away. Until somebody stepped on a twig in the path. It snapped. And the noise was so loud in the quiet forest.
